Our History

Portree's story begins at the end of the Second World War. With the conflict over, vast quantities of surplus brass extrusion — originally manufactured for gun barrels — needed a new purpose. Portree was among the companies that saw the opportunity, repurposing that high-grade material into quality brass window hardware.

From that post-war starting point, the company built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and reliable hardware. Over the following decades, that expertise naturally evolved toward the booming caravan industry, and by the 1950s and 60s, Portree fittings were being fitted to caravans right across New Zealand.

Remarkably, the same hardware that rolled off the line during that golden era of caravanning is still available today — a testament to how well it was designed and built in the first place.
